How the 4.0 scale works and how your GPA is really computed.
GPA (Grade Point Average) summarises your academic performance as one number on a 4.0 scale. Each letter grade converts to grade points, each course is weighted by its credit hours, and the average of it all is your GPA. This GPA calculator does the conversion and the weighting for you, live.
Your GPA matters for scholarships, university admissions, honours lists and many job applications, so it's worth knowing exactly where you stand and what next semester's grades would do to it.
Tip: Credits matter as much as grades. An A in a 4-credit course lifts your GPA more than an A in a 1-credit course, and a low grade in a big course hurts more too.

How GPA is calculated
Multiply each course's grade points by its credits to get quality points, add them up, then divide by the total credits: GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course and a C (2.0) in a 2-credit course give (12 + 13.2 + 4) ÷ 9 ≈ 3.24.

How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add these quality points up, and divide by the total credit hours: GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
What is a good GPA?
It depends on the goal: 3.0+ is a common threshold for many programmes, 3.5+ is typically honours territory, and 3.7+ is competitive for top universities and scholarships. Averages vary by school and course difficulty.
Does A+ count as more than 4.0?
At most institutions A+ is capped at 4.0, the same as an A, which is what this calculator uses. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+; check your institution's policy if it matters for you.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA (used here) treats every course on the same 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA, common in US high schools, adds bonus points for AP, IB or honours classes, so scales can go to 4.5 or 5.0.
How can I raise my GPA?
Prioritise high-credit courses (they move the average most), retake failed classes if your school replaces grades, and remember that the more credits you accumulate, the more slowly your GPA changes, so improving early matters.
