Volume is the amount of 3-D space an object fills, measured in cubic units. This volume calculator covers the six shapes that appear in almost every textbook and real-world job: cube, rectangular box, sphere, cylinder, cone and square pyramid, showing the formula, the substitution and the result.

Works in any unit: enter centimeters and the answer is cm³, enter feet and it's ft³. Just keep every dimension in the same unit.

The ⅓ family: a cone is exactly one third of the cylinder around it, and a pyramid is one third of the box around it. Remember one, get the other free.

Getting volumes right

  1. 1Radius, not diameter

    Sphere, cylinder and cone formulas use the radius. If you measured across the whole circle, halve it first.

  2. 2Same unit everywhere

    Mixing meters and centimeters is the #1 volume mistake. Convert first, then calculate.

  3. 3Height means perpendicular height

    For cones and pyramids, h is the straight vertical height to the apex, not the slanted side.

  4. 4Cubic units convert with a cube

    1 m = 100 cm, but 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³. Length ratios get cubed for volume.

How do I calculate the volume of a box?

Multiply length × width × height. A box 2 × 3 × 4 units has a volume of 24 cubic units. For a cube all three sides are equal, so it is simply the side length cubed.

What is the volume formula for a sphere?

V = (4/3) π r³. For a radius of 5: (4/3) × π × 125 ≈ 523.6 cubic units. Note that doubling the radius multiplies the volume by 8, because the radius is cubed.

What is the difference between the cone and cylinder formulas?

A cone is exactly one third of the cylinder with the same base and height: cylinder V = πr²h, cone V = (1/3)πr²h. You can verify it physically, because three cones of water fill the matching cylinder.

Which units does the volume calculator use?

Any unit you like. It is unit-agnostic, so enter dimensions in cm and the volume is in cm³; enter inches and it is in³. The only rule is that all dimensions must use the same unit.

Does the calculator also give surface area?

Yes. For every shape it reports the total surface area alongside the volume, so a sphere of radius 5 has surface area 4πr² ≈ 314.16 square units.
