A tip calculator answers the two questions every restaurant table faces: how much do we leave, and what does each person owe? Enter the bill, pick a percentage and a group size, and the tip, grand total and per-person share appear instantly, with the math written out.
The formula is simple: tip = bill × percentage. A $50 bill at 15% means $50 × 0.15 = $7.50, for a total of $57.50. Split between two people, that's $28.75 each.
Mental math trick: move the decimal one place left for 10% ($86.40 → $8.64), then double it for 20% ($17.28) or add half of it for 15% ($12.96).

Etiquette says the percentage applies to the food and drink subtotal, though many people simply tip on the final figure.

Total ÷ people. If the shares differ a lot, split the subtotal by what each person ordered, then add the same tip % to each share.

How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. For an $80 bill at 18%: 80 × 0.18 = $14.40 tip, so the total is $94.40. This calculator does it live and also splits the total for you.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15 to 20% for table service is standard: 15% for adequate, 18 to 20% for good service. Counter service is optional (0 to 10%), while delivery usually deserves 10 to 15% with a small minimum.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Take 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. A $64 bill → 10% is $6.40 → 20% is $12.80. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure instead: $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditional etiquette is pre-tax, and no one will fault you for it. Tipping on the post-tax total is slightly more generous, though on an 8% tax the difference at 20% tip is only 1.6% of the bill.
How does splitting the bill work?
