Everything about the PDF to Word Converter

How text is recovered from a PDF, what survives the trip, and when to use each mode.

A PDF is a description of where ink goes on a page, not a document made of paragraphs. Converting one back to Word means reading thousands of positioned text fragments and working out which of them form a line, which lines form a paragraph, and which of those are really headings or list items. This converter does all of that in your browser and hands you a real .docx file.

Nothing is uploaded. Your contract, invoice or thesis stays on your own machine, which matters a great deal more for a PDF you were sent than for a file you wrote yourself.

Private by design. Most PDF-to-Word sites upload your file to a conversion server and keep it for hours. Here the PDF is read by JavaScript on your device and the Word file is assembled there too, so you can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.

The two modes

Editable text is the one you almost always want. It reconstructs paragraphs, headings, bold and italic runs, bullet and numbered lists, and gives you a Word document you can actually rewrite. The layout is rebuilt, not copied, so column positions and exact spacing are approximations.

Page images places a picture of each PDF page into the Word file. The layout is pixel-perfect, but the text is part of the picture and can't be edited or searched. Use it when the look matters more than the words, or when the PDF is a scan with no text in it at all.

How to convert a PDF to Word

  1. 1 Add your PDF

Drag it onto the drop zone or click to browse. Password-protected files will ask for the password.

  2. 2 Pick the mode and pages

Leave Pages empty for the whole document, or type something like 1-5, 9, 12-.

  3. 3 Tidy the preview

The white sheet is exactly what goes into the .docx. Fix a stray line break, delete a leftover header, re-centre a title, because it is a live editor.

  4. 4 Download the Word file

Press Download .docx. There is also a .txt button when you only want the raw words.

What comes across, and what doesn't

Paragraphs, headings, bold and italic text, bullet and numbered lists, page breaks and reading order (including two-column pages) are all reconstructed. Font families, exact sizes and colours are not carried over: the Word file uses one clean body font so it stays easy to edit.

Tables are the hardest case. A PDF table is just lines and text at coordinates, with nothing marking it as a table, so its cells arrive as ordinary paragraphs. If the table matters more than the text, Page images mode will preserve it exactly.

Scanned PDF? If your file came from a scanner or a phone camera, it holds pictures rather than text and no converter can extract words from it without OCR. This tool will tell you when it finds no text, so switch to Page images to at least get the pages into Word.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is opened and read by JavaScript running on your own device, and the Word file is built there too. Nothing is sent to our servers, so there is nothing for us to store or delete.

Why is my converted document not laid out exactly like the PDF?

A PDF stores text as fragments at fixed coordinates, so it has no paragraphs, headings or tables inside it. Converting to Word means inferring that structure, so the result is a clean, editable rebuild rather than a photocopy. If you need the exact look, use Page images mode.

My PDF is a scan and nothing came out. Why?

A scanned PDF contains photographs of pages, not text, so there are no characters to extract. Reading those words requires OCR (optical character recognition). Switch to Page images mode to place the scanned pages into a Word document as pictures.

Can it handle password-protected PDFs?

Yes, if you know the password, and you'll be asked for it when the file opens. The password is used only in your browser to unlock the document and is never transmitted anywhere.

What happened to my tables?

Most PDFs don't mark tables as tables, because the cells are just text placed at coordinates with lines drawn around them. Their contents come through as ordinary paragraphs in reading order. When keeping the table intact matters, Page images mode reproduces it exactly.

Is there a limit on file size or number of conversions?

Convert as many as you like, with no daily quota, because no server does the work. Files are capped at 60 MB so the browser doesn't run out of memory; for a very long PDF, convert it in page ranges.
