Add each assessment with its weight and the grade you got.
What do you need on the final exam to hit your target?
How to Use
- 1Add each assessment with its weight (%) and your grade (%).
- 2Weights don't need to total 100, because the calculator normalises them.
- 3Switch to "Final Grade Needed" to get your target score on the final.
- 4The note tells you instantly if the target is realistic.
Grade Formulas
- Weighted gradegrade = Σ(weight × grade) ÷ Σ weight
- Final grade neededneeded = (target − current×(1−w)) ÷ w
- Letter gradesA ≥ 90 · B ≥ 80 · C ≥ 70 · D ≥ 60

Everything about the Grade Calculator
How weighted grades work and how to know exactly what you need on the final.
Most courses don't average scores equally, because homework, quizzes, midterms and finals each carry a weight. Your course grade is the weighted average of everything so far. This grade calculator computes it live, and its second tab answers every student's favourite question: what do I need on the final?
Knowing your standing mid-semester helps you plan study time where it matters, decide whether to push for the next letter grade, and walk into the final exam without surprises.
Tip: If the "grade needed" comes out above 100%, the target isn't reachable with the final alone, so look for extra credit, or adjust the goal. If it's 0% or less, you've already secured it!
How a weighted grade is calculated
Multiply each grade by its weight, add them up, and divide by the sum of the weights: grade = Σ(wᵢ × gᵢ) ÷ Σwᵢ. For homework 20% × 85, quizzes 20% × 78, midterm 25% × 74 and a project 35% × 88, the course grade is (17 + 15.6 + 18.5 + 30.8) ÷ 1 = 81.9%.
The "final grade needed" formula
If your current grade is C (as a %), the final is worth w (as a fraction) and you want T overall, you need (T − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w on the final. Example: current 78%, final worth 40%, target 80% → (80 − 78 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 83% needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each assessment's grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight: Σ(weight × grade) ÷ Σweight. This calculator does it live and also converts the result to a letter grade.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
No problem. The formula divides by the sum of the weights, so they are normalised automatically. You can enter weights as percentages (20, 30, 50) or as points (200, 150, 650); the ratio is what matters.
How do I find what I need on the final exam?
Use the "Final Grade Needed" tab. It applies (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. With a current 78%, a 40% final and an 80% target, you need 83%.
What does it mean if the needed grade is over 100%?
It means the final exam alone cannot lift you to that target, because even a perfect score would fall short. Consider extra credit, talking to your instructor, or setting a target one band lower.
Can I use points instead of percentages?
Yes for weights (they normalise automatically). Grades should be entered as percentages of each assessment, so if you scored 45/50 on a quiz, enter 90.
Is this grade calculator free and does it work on mobile?
Yes. It's 100% free, needs no sign-up and no download. It works in any modern browser and is fully responsive. Your grades stay in your browser; nothing is stored or shared.
